Greenville SC Photography Classes at the Kroc Center, October 2012

Michael Lamb Photography is excited to announce a series of Digital SLR Photography Classes in Greenville.  Just in time to get to know your camera better before the holidays, Michael is teaching 4 different classes.

  • Monday October 15, 2012 – Basic DSLR.  After a short review of the automatic “scene modes” of your camera, Michael will teach you how and why to get out of the green automatic modes and move towards manual.  There will be an in-depth discussion of ISO, aperture and shutter speeds and how, and when, to adjust them for proper exposure and creative effect.
  • Monday October 29, 2012 – Canon SLR In-Depth.  Michael will help take the fear out of moving all those buttons and dials, and even teach you navigate through your menus with ease.  This class is Canon specific, and though there is no prerequisite, discussion of ISO, aperture and shutter speeds is very limited.   The the Basic SLR class is recommended for those wanting to learn manual exposure.
  • Monday November 5, 2012 – Nikon SLR In-Depth.  Michael will help take the fear out of moving all those buttons and dials, and even teach you navigate through your menus with ease.  This class is Nikon specific, and though there is no prerequisite, discussion of ISO, aperture and shutter speeds is very limited.   The the Basic SLR class is recommended for those wanting to learn manual exposure
  • Monday November 12, 2012Digital Editing using Adobe Photoshop Elements.  Michael will use Elements in a live demonstration.  Working with layers is key to using Photoshop Elements well.  We will start with layers and build upon it using the most commonly used tools.  Learn to correct exposure and color, remove unwanted elements from a picture, merge two images and more.  You are not required to own Photoshop Elements to take the class.  Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 may be downloaded free, for 30 days, from Adobe before or after the class and is available locally for under $100.00.

If you have any questions about any classes, please contact Michael Lamb directly at 864-497-3093 or michael@michaellambphotography.com.  We look forward to seeing you in class!

Quick Fix for Tripod Quick Release needs

Almost every class I teach I mention the need for a tripod.  “Any tripod is better than no tripod” I’ve been known to say.  I will caution anyone about trusting a $30 tripod to hold up their $1000 camera outfit.  Repairs are expensive.  Tripod simply give us sharper images and when shooting in low light are absolutely necessary.

People that know me also know that I am a thrift store/yard sale junkie.  I don’t really need another tripod of any sort but if I find one cheaply I will usually buy it.  Tripods are versatile now more than ever.  Most current flash units can be used off camera without buying camera-to-flash accessories.    And, with about $20 in accessories, a cheap tripod can be turned into a light stand complete with a flash bracket AND umbrella mount.

I have steered away from and even talked people out of buying off-brand use tripods that were missing the quick release knowing they will never find a replacement.  That was until today.  I didn’t realize there was a site, and even a local store, I could find an odd quick release.

Please check out www.tripodquickrelease.com, buy the part you need and make use of that old tripod.  It’s part of Spartan Photo Center in Spartanburg SC.  Now I’m going to have to make more room in a garage already filled with “maybe I’ll use that in a shoot one day” stuff (and no cars).   Have fun shooting.  ML

Our SLR classes begin again in Spartanburg SC on Tuesday Feb 21.  All classes are held at Spartan Photo Center, Tuesdays and Thursdays 6-8PM.

Tuesday Feb 21, 2012 – Basic SLR:  This class is for beginner SLR users.  What’s the difference between the “green” auto mode and Program?  After a review of the automatic scene modes built into your camera, we will teach you how and why you should your Program mode.  Knowing your camera better, and being able to predict the outcome of different modes will have you shooting better pictures the moment you leave the class.

Tuesday Feb 28, 2012 – Advanced SLR.  Learn to shoot in full manual.  This class is a continuation of our Basic SLR class and will teach you to shoot in Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual modes.  There will be an in-depth discussion of aperture, shutter speeds and your camera’s built-in meter.  While we don’t require taking our Basic SLR class before the advanced class, we recommend being very comfortable with controlling ISO before taking our Advanced SLR class.

Other classes:  Nikon system, Basic and Advanced Flash Photography, Canon System, Olympus System, SLR video and editing, and Studio Lighting.

Take any class again FREE and bring your spouse.  Michael Lamb Photography and Spartan Photo Center have combined their photography class policies to give you the best possible class experience.  First, you can bring a spouse FREE so you don’t have to come alone.  Second, you can take the class again FREE if ever you need a refresher.
